First Generation (1999-2006)
The mini SUV TOYOTA CAMI went on sale in May 1999 after TOYOTA reached an OEM agreement with DAIHATSU to receive supplies of the DAIHATSU TERIOS.
The chassis employed a built-in frame monocoque body, securing running performance even on bad roads. Though the body was compact, measuring in length, width, and height at 3,815mm, 1,555mm, and 1,760mm respectively, the wheelbase measured at 2,420mm, thus guaranteeing plenty of passenger space. Moreover, due to a relatively high seating position, the model was able to achieve an interior space that boasted openness. In terms of the interior, the front and rear seats were flattened and designed to be sideways detachable folding seats, thus making it possible for users to rearrange seating.
Additionally, focus was placed on safety features; the ABS and dual SRS airbags were installed as standard equipment.
The body type was a 5-door. A distinctive feature was the tail gates that opened sideways.
The four-cylinder 1,295cc gasoline engine with 92 horsepower was made available, combined with either the 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.
The drive system was the full-time 4WD for all vehicles. Running performance was increased through the use of a center differential lock mechanism that made locking possible with just one button.
Minor changes were implemented in May 2000. For the exterior, changes were made to the front bumper, grille, and rear combination lamps, heightening an air of novelty. For the interior as well, storage space was enlarged, and further changes were made to allow for a design that increased visibility of the meters.
Moreover, new generation engines were installed; users now had the option to choose the 1,297cc naturally aspirated engine with 90 horsepower and the 1,297cc turbo engine with 140 horsepower. To this engine, the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) was installed, enhancing power output and fuel efficiency. In terms of the drive system as well, in addition to the 4WD, the FR was newly added to the lineup.
Minor changes were made in January 2002, leading to alterations to the interior design as well as an overall enhancement in quality. Moreover, in terms of the engine, cleaner gas emission was achieved, leading to the model receiving certification as a Good Low-Emission Vehicle (G-LEV). As for fuel efficiency, from the turbocharged vehicle’s fuel consumption of 12.8km/L, the naturally aspirated FR vehicle with 5-speed manual transmission measured at 16.4km/L.
