The same engine and transmission were carried over from the previous generation model.

As for sales, this model was sold concurrently with the second generation model.

Fourth Generation L40 Model (1969-1972)

The fourth generation model was introduced in 1969 and based on the design of the Giorgetto Giugiaro. For the outer design, two-lamp rectangular headlights were installed. In terms of the interior, the design was enhanced with features such as a wooden dashboard. For the grades, there were two variations-the standard and super deluxe; for the latter, metal plated bumpers on the exterior and radios were installed, differentiating it from the others.

When first introduced, the engine’s power output was 25 horsepower, but in 1971, this was improved to 27 horsepower.

Fifth Generation L50 Model (1972-1976)

The fifth generation model was introduced in May 1972. For the exterior, rounded two-lamp headlights were revived, leading to a more common and universal design. However, the vertical door handles that were a distinctive feature of the previous generation model were carried over.

In November 1973, changes such as the addition of the cushion rubber onto the bumper led to the model’s adhering to amendments in safety standards.

In August 1974, an economy car was added as a cheaper grade. For this grade, fenders were not installed.

Minor changes made in 1975 led to improvements of certain areas, including the front grille and bumper on the exterior, and the instrument panel for the interior.
As for the engine, the L50 water-cooling two-cycle two-cylinder 359cc engine with 28 horsepower was installed in the beginning, to adhere to the 1973 gas emission regulations; however, later on, to adhere to new gas emission regulation standards made in 1975, the engine’s power output was reduced to 25 horsepower.

Sixth Generation ST10 Model (1976)

In May 1976, the CARRY 55 went on sale, with the only difference being a change in engine to the LJ50 water-cooling two-cycle three-cylinder 539cc with 26 horsepower. Changes to the exterior consisted only of an enlarging of the front bumper; otherwise, the body remained the same. The sales period for this model was only four months.

Seventh Generation ST20 Model (1976-1979)

In September 1976, responding to new standards, the CARRY WIDE was developed and released. Again, the size was designed to adhere to new standards; an appropriately sized cab and loading deck were installed, greatly improving riding comfort and loading capacity. As for the interior, for the first time, sliding seats were utilized for the driver’s seats.

The LJ50 water-cooling two-cycle three-cylinder 539cc engine with 26 horsepower was carried over from the previous generation model.

Minor changes were implemented in October 1977, leading to alterations to the interior and exterior. For the exterior, the front grille was upgraded, and for the interior, improvements were made on the instrument panel. The angle of the steering wheel was also improved, leading to the reduction of the minimum turning radius from 4.0m to 3.8m.

Eight Generation ST30/ST31/ST40/ST41 Model (1979-1985)

In April 1979, the eight generation model went on sale.

The same LJ50 water-cooling two-cycle three-cylinder 539cc engine was carried over. This was the last model that utilized this two-cycle engine.

In 1981, minor changes were made, and the four-cycle engine was introduced. Furthermore, the 4WD was added, and the tire size also expanded to 12 inches in diameter.

Ninth Generation DA71T/DB71T/DA81T/DA41T/DB41T/DA51T/DB51T Model (1985-1991)

The ninth generation model that was introduced in April 1986 was released based on adherence to new standards involving kei (mini, small-sized) vehicles; engine displacement was increased to 657cc. The car body was enlarged, measuring in length, width, and height at 3,275mm, 1,395mm, and 1,705mm respectively.

The newly installed 657cc engine achieved a maximum power output of 38 horsepower.

The transmissions combined were the 4-speed manual and 5-speed manual.

As for the grades, the 4WD had five variations, and the FR had six variations in its lineup.

For the body, variations included the 3-way wide deck, fixed-side pickup truck, and the KINTARO DUMP TRUCK.

In October 1990, minor changes were implemented, and the engine’s power output was enhanced to 42 horsepower.

Tenth Generation DC51T/DD51T Model (1991-1999)

In September 1991, another full model change led to the introduction of the tenth generation model. Again, adhering to new standards, the full size body was changed, allowing for the interior length to increase by 60mm. Furthermore, the door openings’ area was enlarged, and the height of the seats were lowered, further improving passenger comfort.
The car body was slightly enlarged, measuring in length, width, and height at 3,295mm, 1,395mm, and 1,715mm respectively.

The engine installed was the same as that of the previous generation model.

Minor changes were made to the interior and exterior in April 1997; at the same time, a turbocharged engine was added to the lineup. This newly introduced engine achieved a significant increase in power output, measuring at 60 horsepower.

Eleventh Generation DA52T/DB52T/DA62T/DA63T/DA65T Model (1999-2013)

The eleventh generation model, which was introduced in January 1999, was developed with the catchphrase, “Powerful, Gentle, and Comfortable” in mind. The shape of the cab underwent significant changes, further improving collision safety; additionally, there was a focus on making the vehicle lighter. The car body was further enlarged, measuring in length, width, and height at 3,395mm, 1,475mm, and 1,790mm respectively.

The engine lineup consisted of the inline three-cylinder SOHC12 naturally aspirated valve engine with 42 horsepower and a turbocharged engine with 56 horsepower. The fuel consumption measured between 15.6km/L and 16.2km/L for the naturally aspirated engine, and between 14.4km/L and 15.4km/L for the turbocharged.

This was combined with either the 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission.

As for the grade lineup, there were two naturally aspirated models-the KA and Turbo-as well as the Nohan, designed for use in farm work.

In November 1999, minor improvements were made to the engine, and airbags for the driver’s seat were made available as an equipment option, further improving driving performance and safety features.

In May 2000, front seat airbags + ABS + seatbelt pretensioners were made maker options, further enhancing safety features.

As the product of the first model change in 14 years (since 1999), the model saw universal use of short wheelbases in all vehicles to boost running performance. Moreover, aiming for enhanced usability, the minimum turning radius was improved, new model engines were installed, and the car body was lightened by 50kg. Additionally, the car body layout was completely reexamined; though the long-lengthed loading deck floor was maintained, the interior space was enlarged to further improve riding and driving comfort. Other changes included long-term anti-corrosion warranty and improvements for adherence to 56km/h offset collision regulations, achieving further enhancement in performance and safety features.

The RO6A water-cooling four-cycle inline three-cylinder engine with 50 horsepower was utilized. For the fuel consumption, the FR 5-speed manual transmission achieved 18.6km/L, greatly enhancing fuel efficiency.
