*Number of vehicles being imported in to Zambia has seen a four-fold increase between 2008 to 2014.
*Over 22,000 cars were imported in 2013 compared to 5,000 in 2008.
*What caused the number to increase dramatically in that time?
*Below are some factors that might have contributed to the rise.
Why is the number of imported vehicles rising?
1 Population increase. Population in Zambia was estimated at 6.785 million in 1985. This had increased to 10.2 million by 2000, and 13 million by 2010. That's nearly twice as many Zambians in 2010 compared to 1985.
The population is set to increase even further over the years, thus creating higher demand for cars as public transport system struggles to keep up with the demand.
2 Online Accessibility & Improved Service. It has never been easier to purchase online. More people are getting connected to the net, and hundreds of thousands of vehicles are available at any time to be purchased on the net from Japan.
Many Japanese car exporters are also offering door-to-door service, thereby eliminating the hassle of having to to travel thousands of miles to pick up the vehicle from the port.
Buying online also saves you a good chunk of money because it cuts out the middle-man (dealer) expense.
3 Strong economic growth. Zambia's economy is one of the fastest growing in the world.
The GDP graph below shows Zambia's GDP grew four-folds from 2000 to 2013, far outpacing its African counterparts. Economic outlook remains strong, helped by its buoyant copper and agriculture industry.
The rising number of middle-income families along with more affordable loan rates from the banks are also enabling more to own something that was previously reserved for the privileged few.
