Last updated:

Braking system is one of the most important parts whenever we undertake the driving of any vehicle. The person behind the wheel should be well acquainted with the different types of brake mechanisms that are available in the cars. There are disc brakes and the pedal brakes which are commonly used in the cars. We should be able to ascertain whether the brakes are in order. This could be done only when we actually sit and take a ride in the car. We should know whether the vehicle would stop at the point where we actually need to stop when the brakes are applied. Whether the car gets a pull to either of the sides when the brakes are applied? Does the steering wheel bear any vouble when you apply the brakes is also important. Is there any squeal when you stop with a jerk? Is there any resistance to the foot pedal when you apply the brakes? Is there a push and jerky bounce when you want to stop suddenly? Oh! There are so many questions that need a proper and scientific explanation when we are driving a car and need the help of brake system to bring the car to a halt.

Let us discuss some of these in the following passages:

it is always a good habit to check the car before handling it. The brakes could be assessed by the following methods- start up the engine and try to press the pedal foot and try to feel the sensation as the pedal moves.

1. If the pedal movement feels very soft and without any resistance, there is possibility of having air in the brake liners. This could be easily sorted out.

2. If the pedal is hard and difficult to be pressed down, there is possibility of the cylinder having some malfunctioning and this need to be carefully looked into.

3. When the car has the power brakes, the pedal should stop about 2.5 to 3 inches above the floor of the car. Then it is in proper condition and in case of the pedal brake system, this pedal could stop closer to the floor of the car.

4. When the car has pedal brakes and they are not doing the job of slowing down the car, try to pump the pedal two to three times and see the effect. This is a clear indication that the brake fluid levels are not correct and needs to be checked.

5. In case of the disc brakes the system is self adjusting and if anything goes wrong, the drum brakes would not be doing the adjustment as a result cause the damage to the pedals.

6. When you notice that the car is being pulled to any of the sides when brakes are applied, there are chances that the brake fluid has leaked causing the caliper to be stuck and hence the action of pulling.

7. When we notice the steering wheel shaking when brakes are applied, the problem is with the front disc brakes and needs immediate attention from the qualified mechanic to replace the front discs.

8. When the brake liner get worn out or damaged, the grinding noise is noticed in the pedal. This needs immediate attention as the worn out liner could cause damage to the surrounding components due to the friction. Earlier the replacement, the extensive damage could be saved.

The problem of the brake systems need to be immediately corrected and not neglected in any of the circumstances. Take time and sort out the problem on priority basis as it connects to the safety of you and your loved ones always.
